These photos show apartments located in Thibodaux , Louisiana . As you can see they appear to be uninhabited due to
hurricane Gustav, fallen ceilings, wet insulation on beds and furniture, exposed wiring, mold growing on ceilings, walls and
in closets, broken pipes, soaked carpet, broken steps, and electricity cut off in areas of the apartment due to water and
open walls. The City of Thibodaux has condemned the apartments and said they should not be occupied by the 48 families
living there, 48 families that include men, women, children, babies, elderly, handicapped folks and a pregnant woman. Well
according to FEMA these 48 apartments with 48 families, about 150 people, can live in these substandard as well as
dangerous conditions.
This is not what I heard but what I saw when I inspected this apartment complex and the sad part is that these photos cannot
possibly tell the complete story, it cannot share with you the smell of the mold and mildew present, they didn’t share with you
the number of apartments in this horrible condition, they didn’t show you the elderly women sitting on her sofa watching TV
as water pooled in her hallway nor the mold growing on her walls.
What these folks are looking for is housing assistance while the management repairs their apartments. These apartments
cannot be repaired while people are living in the apartments. The roofers are scheduled to begin repairing the roof, but that
will only stop the rain from coming in, it won’t stop the mold or mildew from growing, nor the pipes from flooding. One of the
conditions of FEMA providing housing assistance is that the home is not in livable condition, according to the City of
Thibodaux they are not and I concur with that decision. Please contact you representatives, media folks and whoever will
listen, and tell them that these people need help, now.
