Past Events
Thursday Oct. 26 at 1:30 PM - The Lafourche Parish STOP Poverty meeting at the
Shondra Barrios Bldg in Raceland. Issues discussed were Transportation and Housing as
well as others. BISCO issues are being addressed parish wide and we need to be
involved in this work.
Saturday Oct. 28, 2006 - From 10 am to 4 PM in Baton Rouge - Leadership Academy at
Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Baton Rouge. This was a training with leaders from
congregations throughout LA. It was planned for both new leaders and experienced
leaders, so there was something there for everyone.
Thursday Nov. 2, 2006 - We were visited by Sr. Susan Wells of California. She was
interested in learning about our area as her order is considering sending someone to
work with us or other programs in Louisiana.
Friday - Nov. 3, 2006 - We were visited by the Southern Partners Fund Foundation
representative, Mr. Fernando Cervas.
Monday Nov. 13 - 15 2006 - We had several representatives who went to Washington DC
to address and study the SCHIP program which is up for reauthorization next year. This
is the national children's health care program of which LA Chip is the La counterpart.
LA is on track to run out of funds for LA CHIP in the near future according to our
research on the federal level and the SCHIP program is up for reauthorization and is
threatened to be reduced or face worse fates. We did research on a National level.
While there, we also addressed the coastal erosion legislation which was in committee
and decided upon in the next month and other hurricane related work in D.C. and share
this information with our other programs throughout the US. Those attending were:
Rev. Lionel Griffin, Rev. Kirkland Aitkens, Rev. Gilbert Washington, Pastor Shirley
Gravois, Ms. Lorene Watkins and myself.
